What we do with the STAAR report
ScoreMap reads raw domain scores directly from your child's STAAR report — either from photos you upload or from scores you enter manually. We do not modify, interpret, or estimate any score. Every number you see came directly from the STAAR document.
How domain performance levels are calculated
TEA publishes overall scale score thresholds for Masters, Meets, Approaches, and Did Not Meet. We apply those same four tiers to individual domain percentages (e.g., 21/26 = 81% = Meets). Domain-level thresholds are ScoreMap's interpretation applied at the domain level — TEA publishes thresholds for the overall test, not individual domains.
Why we break out individual domains
A student can score Masters overall while having one domain at Meets or lower. The overall score hides that detail. Domain breakdown is the core value ScoreMap provides — it shows exactly where to focus between now and the next test.
What each STAAR domain covers
Reading Comprehension — main ideas, inference, vocabulary in context, author's purpose, literary devices
Written Composition — organization, development of ideas, word choice, conventions
Numerical Representations — place value, fractions, decimals, number relationships
Computations & Algebraic Relationships — operations, multi-step problems, equations, algebraic thinking
Geometry & Measurement — shapes, area, perimeter, volume, angles, measurement
Data & Financial Literacy — graphs, data analysis, statistics, financial concepts
How we select Khan Academy topics
Every Khan Academy recommendation is drawn from the official TEA STAAR blueprint for your child's grade — the same document Texas teachers use to plan instruction. Topics are organized into three tiers by difficulty:
- Foundational — for students below 55% in a domain. Start here if the basics aren't solid yet.
- Mid-level — for students at 55–69%. These are the skills students at this level are most likely missing.
- Advanced — for students at 70–84%. Skip the basics — these are the enrichment and challenge skills that push toward Masters.
A student at 62% in Computations & Algebraic Relationships, for example, will never see "multiplication facts" in their recommendations — they've already demonstrated competency there. Instead they'll see two-step word problems and equations with unknowns, which is what students at that level are actually missing. This applies to all 6 domains across Grades 3–8.
Book recommendations
Books are matched to your child's Lexile score from our curated database of 74+ age-appropriate titles. Books are never AI-generated. Students above their Lexile range are marked as "Guided Read" — best read together with a parent.
What AI generates
The narrative interpretation (what the scores mean), the roadmap activities, and the student letter are generated by Claude (Anthropic's AI). Every number in the narrative must match the STAAR report — we validate this automatically. AI never generates book titles, Khan Academy URLs, domain scores, percentages, or statistics.
Data and privacy
Survey responses and feedback are stored anonymously — no name or email is attached to them. Score reports are generated in real time and not stored after the report is sent. Your child's data is never sold or shared.
